Kyoto - West

Mainly known for its bamboo forest and wooden bridge, the west of Kyoto has so much more to offer, so long as you're willing to venture off the beaten track…

Arashiyama station is a sad “disney-esque” collection of souvenirs stores and garish instagram-friendly food stores. Rent a bicycle and search for a less adulterated experience.

15mns bike-ride north of Arashiyama station is the “boutique” moss garden of Giouji temple. Get there early to enjoy the silence and green beauty of this gem of a place.

Further north, loose yourself in the charming streets maizes of the Saga Toriimoto area. Without car passing by, you feel as on a Edo-era movie set. Magical!

On your way down, toward the river you can go through the bamboo path….Get there early to avoid the crowd: 10-17 is as enjoyable as metro’s rush hour….

Togetsutei bridge.

A bridge. Made of wood.

On your way back from the above, if you can fight your way through the crowd, this may be worth 2mns of your time. Max.
